A five-member delegation from Brazil will be in St. John’s, June 19 – 20, 2013 to explore opportunities for industrial and economic collaboration between the State of Rio Grande do Sul and the province’s ocean technology (OT) cluster.
The five Brazilian delegates include senior representatives of government and academia from Rio Grande do Sul, the most southerly State in Brazil. The state is rapidly building its capability and capacity to take advantage of opportunities in the oil and gas, shipbuilding, and oceans/marine sectors. Organizations represented by the delegation include the Rio Grande do Sul Development Agency, the Federation of Industries of Rio Grande do Sul, and the Governor’s Office of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (FURG).
OceansAdvance (OA), the umbrella organization for Newfoundland and Labrador’s Ocean Technology Cluster has an MOU with the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul to foster collaboration between the two regions. This visit, co-hosted by OA and NATI, is a result of ongoing discussions over the last few months between OA and FURG.
An important part of the visit includes a Speakers Series Breakfast Session followed by a Roundtable Discussion June 19 from 9:00 a.m. to Noon at the NRC Building on Memorial University’s campus in St. John’s. This event is cohosted by OA and the City of St. John’s.
The guest speaker at the Breakfast Session, which begins at 9:00 on June 19, is F.U.R.G Vice President Dr. Danilo Giroldo. He will describe the background to his state’s industry, research, and development growth and to opportunities for local business to partner in Rio Grande do Sul. As well he will outline FURG’s perspective on how critical collaboration is between academia and industry to make the most of opportunities for economic development. This session will be followed by a roundtable to exchange ideas and identify opportunities for business development, partnering, and R&D collaborations in this exciting region of Brazil. The event is scheduled to wrap up around noon.
