St. John’s, January 06, 2012: An awards competition aimed at fostering the research capabilities of post-secondary students interested in ocean-related research in Newfoundland and Labrador has set its deadline for late January. The Research & Development Corporation (RDC) is accepting applications for its 2012 Ocean Industries Student Research Awards competition until Friday, Jan. 27, 2012, at 4:30 p.m., NST.

This RDC competition targets graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in ocean industries-relevant programs, including offshore petroleum engineering and geosciences, ocean engineering, fisheries, aquaculture, and marine science, and other areas that support innovation and the commercialization of ocean technologies in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Post-secondary undergraduate and graduate students in Canada and internationally, who are interested in pursuing ocean industries-related studies and research in Newfoundland and Labrador, at Memorial University of Newfoundland or at the College of the North Atlantic, are encouraged to apply.

The awards range up to $7,500 per year at the undergraduate level and between $20,000 and $30,000 per year at the graduate level. There will be an estimated 20 research awards available. The students’ research supervisors will also receive funding to support their supervisory work.
