(St. John’s, NL: 05 June 2014) The majority of members of the legislature passed a private member’s motion yesterday calling on the Federal Government to improve the Marine Atlantic ferry service. During debate, the Provincial Government highlighted the importance of Marine Atlantic as a vital link between the island portion of the province and mainland Canada for residents and businesses.
“We have heard the concerns of residents, organizations and businesses in this province regarding the increased rates and reduced schedule for the Marine Atlantic Ferry service this summer. I call upon the Federal Government to ensure that our residents and businesses can rely upon a high-quality service. Marine Atlantic is vital for our people and our businesses. It is the responsibility of the Federal Government to ensure Marine Atlantic is provided with the resources necessary to deliver upon their commitment to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.”
– The Honourable Steve Kent, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs
A letter has been sent to the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Federal Minister of Transport, expressing the province’s concerns over the increased rates and reduced Marine Atlantic ferry service for this summer. A copy of the letter is available at: http://miga.gov.nl.ca/pdf/Letter_re_Marine_Atlantic_June32014.pdf PDF
“The people of Newfoundland and Labrador deserve a high-quality marine service, and the Federal Government is responsible for ensuring that this is the case. Our province relies upon Marine Atlantic as a route for tourists to visit this province which contributes to the growth of our tourism industry. Recent changes made by Marine Atlantic will reduce service, and have been implemented too late in the season after many tourists have already made their summer plans. We will continue to advocate on behalf of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador to ensure that both our residents and visitors to this province are being treated fairly and equitably.”
– The Honourable Sandy Collins, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation
The Provincial Government will continue to advocate on behalf of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador for an improved Marine Atlantic ferry service to ensure the flow of passengers and commercial traffic in and out of the province.
