Irving Shipbuilding is partnering with MEOPAR to provide $1 million for oceans research in Canada.
Irving Shipbuilding’s funding is pursuant to its Value Proposition obligation under the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy, whereby Irving Shipbuilding is committed to spending 0.5% of contract revenues with the aim of creating a sustainable marine industry across Canada.
This funding will be combined with an additional $0.5 million from MEOPAR to support projects that align with the overall goal of improving Canada’s ability to observe, predict, and respond to marine hazards.
“Irving Shipbuilding is pleased to support this call for proposals in partnership with MEOPAR. Ensuring Canada has a sustainable and vibrant marine industry is one of the cornerstones of the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy”, said Kevin McCoy, Irving Shipbuilding President.
“Partnerships like these show a commitment by industry, in this case Irving Shipbuilding, to advance our preparedness in the face of risks that arise from modern uses of the ocean and a rapidly changing marine environment,” said Douglas Wallace, Scientific Director for MEOPAR. “They also help Canada to capitalize on great ideas, innovation potential and enthusiasm of our students and researchers. We’re excited to partner with Irving Shipbuilding and we look forward to working together to address the present and future challenges of the ocean.”
The formal Call for Research Proposals is now available on the MEOPAR website (closing date is August 23, 2015). MEOPAR will announce the successful proposals together with Irving Shipbuilding on Sept.15, 2015.
