20 December 2012: The report for the World Ocean Council (WOC) meeting of Arctic industry representatives to explore creating an “Arctic Business Leadership Council” (Reykjavik, 16 September, 2012) is now available here.
In a separate event, the Arctic Council’s Sustainable Development Working Group (SDWG) held its first ever “Informal Business Dialogue” (Reykjavik, 17 September 2013), and invited the WOC and industry representatives to provide input to the forum. WOC Members and business participants in the SDWG Business Dialogue may contact WOC for a summary of the discussions.
The WOC Arctic business meeting brought together more than 30 representatives from shipping, oil and gas, fisheries, mining, marine science/technology and other industries with Arctic interests and operations. Over two-thirds of the participating companies were non-WOC Members, several of whom joined the WOC soon after the Reykjavik meeting.
The WOC gathering created a unique opportunity for the private sector to explore how to catalyze multi-sectoral leadership and collaboration among responsible companies on the future of the Arctic. Key discussion areas included the interest of many companies in the collecting and sharing Arctic data, consistent with the WOC Smart Ocean/Smart Industries program.
Industry participants requested the WOC to follow up by engaging with companies to develop a workable set of prioritized issues and activities and determine if there is a critical mass of companies interested to collaborate on these.
WOC efforts to advance industry leadership and collaboration on responsible Arctic stewardship will continue during the WOC Sustainable Ocean Summit (22-24 April, 2013, Washington, D.C.). In addition, the WOC is a Supporter of the Economist Arctic Summit (12 March 2013, Oslo).
