September, 2012, St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada: Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Marine Institute students banded together to form a student chapter. Students from the Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering Systems Design, Ocean Instrumentation, Ocean Mapping, and Remotely Operated Vehicles quickly jumped at the opportunity to become MTS members; nearly 140 students in total.
In short order, a student executive board was elected and one lucky student was randomly chosen to attend the Oceans 12 Conference in Virginia. Students meet on a weekly basis to plan for events and fundraisers. One event was held in October (NGRAIN presentation) and was very successful, and several others have been planned for November.
The Marine Institute is very proud of its students for taking the initiative to come together and organize such a student chapter. It is expected that the chapter will continue to grow as other diploma program groups are able to join.
