Girls Who Fish
Fishing for Success was established as a nonprofit social enterprise to transmit the intangible cultural heritage of Newfoundland & Labrador’s small-scale fishery. They began to identify areas that needed specific targeted programming in order to help inform youth. A broad area that needed targeting is to simply make space for women in the boat! And that’s how the ‘Girls Who Fish’ program got started.
Teaching children to fish, especially girls, is a ‘gateway’ activity to piquing a child’s interest in so many other science careers! Fishing is such a multidisciplinary activity, and being a province that is surrounded by coastline, we are missing out on an opportunity to guarantee our children a place in the Blue Economy, if we don’t get them hooked!
