Marine Institute – School of Ocean Technology
The Marine Institute’s School of Ocean Technology delivers education and training in various aspects of ocean technology.
Current education and training programs include:

- Joint Diploma of Technology / Bachelor of Technology (Underwater Vehicles) – BTech (UV
- Joint Diploma of Technology / Bachelor of Technology (Ocean Mapping) – BTech (OM)
- Masters of Technology Management (MTM)
The School also undertakes applied research and development programs in four primary areas:
- Ocean mapping (acoustics, lidar).
- Ocean observing systems (system design, implementation, operation).
- Ocean instrumentation (smart ocean sensors).
- Underwater intervention (ROVs, AUVs, gliders).
Research and training facilities include:
- Southside Marine Base – provides nautical science training and offshore safety and survival training.
- Flume Tank – conducts performance evaluations , tests and other observations on newly developed or existing fishing gears and other equipment in simulated underwater and near surface conditions.
- Underwater Cameras/Camera Systems – supports both field work and tank projects.
- Remotely Operated Vehicles – supports in situ training and observation.
- MV Anne S. Pierce – training and research vessel.
- Acoustics Tank – used for transducer development, materials, and flow noise studies in addition to structural acoustics.
SmartBay™, an ocean observing system established and operated by the Marine Institute in Placentia Bay contributes to safe operations by the offshore oil and gas industry and local fishers through monitoring and forecasting of maritime weather conditions in the area.
