Marine Institute – Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Resources (CSAR)
The Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Resources (CSAR) is a unit of the School of Fisheries at the Marine Institute. CSAR undertakes industrial research and development, technology transfer, testing and technical support on a general basis as well as on a contract or joint venture basis. The primary focus is on specific needs of fishers and fishing gear manufacturers but the Centre also performs assignments for w wide range of other clients and applications.
The primary testing facility for CSAR is the Marine Institute’s flume tank – the world’s largest. This advanced facility incorporates sophisticated video recording, computer software, sensor equipment and special features. The Centre has a core staff in the disciplines of fisheries engineering, fish behaviour, fishing technology, fishing gear, and mechanical engineering.
Areas of research and development include:
- Harvesting technology.
- Ocean energy – turbine testing.
- Underwater intervention – AUV and Glider testing.
- Hydrodynamic performance evaluations.
The Centre’s specialists have worked on a range of projects world-wide from sea trials in Alaska to technology projects in Australia, for a variety of national and international clients.
