NASA – North Atlantic Aerosols and Marine Ecosystems Study (NAAMES)

Focusing off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, The North Atlantic Aerosols and Marine Ecosystems Study (NAAMES) is a NASA-led five year investigation to resolve key processes controlling ocean system function, their influences on atmospheric aerosols and clouds and their implications for climate.
NAAMES is one of NASA’s second series of Earth Venture suborbital investigations, part of NASA’s Earth System Science Pathfinder (ESSP) Program for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Observations obtained during four, targeted ship and aircraft measurement campaigns, combined with the continuous satellite and in situ ocean sensor records, will enable improved predictive capabilities of Earth system processes and will inform ocean management and assessment of ecosystem change.
NAAMES are using research planes, as well as a research vessel to monitor aspects of the North Atlantic through the seasons, over a five-year period.
On Thursday morning, May 26th, Dr. Richard Moore, Deputy Project Scientist of the NAAMES project will present the background on the mission to the OceansAdvance Cluster and will discuss potential collaborative opportunities for cluster members.
Dr. Moore is an airborne atmospheric scientist at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, USA. In this role, he works closely with the other members of the NASA Langley Aerosol Research Group (LARGE) and NASA Langley Lidar Applications Group to study the interaction between atmospheric aerosols and cloud formation, which are important for resolving key processes governing Earth’s radiation balance, air quality, and climate. Rich is also actively involved in the current NASA Earth Venture Suborbital Mission, NAAMES (The North Atlantic Aerosols and Marine Ecosystems Study), where he serves as the Deputy Project Scientist responsible for coordinating, planning, and executing the NAAMES science objectives and flight operations.
