Grants and Fellowships 

Engage Grants (EG): giving companies that operate from a Canadian base access to the knowledge and expertise available at Canadian universities. The grant supports short term R&D projects to solve a problem specific to the company.

Typical application success rate: 90%

Typical grant range: up to $25,000

Industrial R&D Fellowships (IRDF): helping companies hire PhD graduates for a 2-year period to undertake a research project(s) of importance to your company, and to evaluate the post doctoral fellow for potential long-term employment.

Typical application success rate: 80%
NSERC contribution: $30,000 a year

Industrial Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA): helping organizations hire an undergraduate researcher for 12-16 weeks to undertake a project of importance.

Typical application success rate: 90%
NSERC contribution: max of $4,500 for a 16 week term.


NSERC’s role is to make investments in people, discovery and innovation to increase Canada’s scientific and technological capabilities for the benefit of all Canadians. NSERC invests in people by supporting postsecondary students and postdoctoral fellows in their advanced studies.
