CWOIL Update: CWOIL Conference May 9-11, 2023
The Canadian Women in Ocean Industries Leadership (CWOIL) Conference will take place May 9-11, 2023, at the Delta Hotel in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.
The Conference will bring together 150+ ocean professionals in the ocean sector, including representation from equity seeking groups: 2SLGBTQ+ community; Indigenous communities; persons with disabilities; and racialized people. The CWOIL initiative aims to attract, develop and retain a robust, diverse and inclusive talent pipeline that includes women from all origins to enable and accelerate Canadian innovation, research and technology development, and market and export leadership, in ocean industries. From May 9-11, 2023 the CWOIL Conference will see further discussions that will formulate an action plan for ensuring more women become leaders in ocean industries. Additionally, there will be a celebration of current female leaders in ocean industries.

Blue Economy Regulatory Review is officially underway
As part of the third round of the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat’s targeted Regulatory Reviews. The Blue Economy Regulatory Review will be led by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, working in collaboration with other government departments.
Input from ocean industry stakeholders, Indigenous peoples, other levels of government and other organizations or individuals interested in regulatory issues related to the Blue Economy, is being sought through the Blue Economy Regulatory Review project using the online engagement platform being piloted by Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat, Let’s Talk Federal Regulations. Comments are sought by March 17, 2023

Our theme is Blue Economy: Locally Sourced, Globally Driven, emphasizing the fact that all our local efforts are integrally linked to the larger world-ocean, and we must all work toward sustainability together. The Mississippi coast is home to a number of U.S. Navy and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) offices. It only makes sense that both would serve as Federal Honorary Co-Chairs for OCEANS 2023. Representing the U.S. Navy will be Admiral Ron Piret, Commander Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command. Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society (CMOS) 57th Congress May 28 to June 1, 2023
The theme of the Congress is “Connecting on the Rock: From the Marine Environment to the Blue Economy”, recognizing that this is the first time in several years that the CMOS community will meet face‑to‑face. We hope that this Congress will remind us of the connection we share with each other and the connection between science and society, particularly with respect to a better understanding of extreme events and fostering a Blue Economy.

Canada Marine Planning Atlas Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Marine Spatial Planning team is excited to announce the official launch of the Canada Marine Planning Atlas (the Atlas). The Atlas is an interactive mapping tool which will support marine spatial planning (MSP) by supplying decision makers, DFO partners and stakeholders and the public with access to curated information on economic, ecological and sociocultural activities occurring in Canada’s marine spaces.

Skills Canada Newfoundland and Labrador (SCNL) is partnering with College of the North Atlantic (CNA) to offer tuition opportunities to secondary and current post-secondary students, and financial support to graduating students, who demonstrate excellence in Skills Canada competitions.
Ocean Wise is recruiting youth (19 – 30) for its life-changing Ocean Bridge and Direct Action programs.
These programs provide direct experience in ocean conservation and public engagement skills through the lens of community service. Learning from experts in marine conservation, and supported by Ocean Wise, youth are empowered to take action and become impactful leaders in their communities and ocean ambassadors. Applications can be made here for Direct Action and for Ocean Bridge. We’d like to see a tidal wave of young Canadians applying for these free incredible programs funded by Canada Service Corps.
Transport Canada is currently accepting funding applications for the Ballast Water Innovation Program until May 10, 2023 (13h00 EST).
The Ballast Water Innovation Program (BWIP) aims to fund projects that will help to address technical and operational challenges with Ballast Water Management Systems (BWMS) in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River (GLSLR) region, whose waters are cold, fresh, and mixed with sediment.
