Technological changes are rapidly transforming our ocean industries impacting career choices for today’s students, the workforce of tomorrow. We see rapid developments every day yet many young people are not aware of the promising careers required to support the growth of our ocean industry sectors over the next 5-10 years.

OceansXchange helps youth explore these opportunities by connecting them with ocean professionals and immersing them in real world projects though work site visits. Mentors help them navigate towards rewarding careers in NL ocean industries.

Career Immersion Days

In Newfoundland and Labrador, ocean industries are the mainstay of our economy and a major source for jobs. New technologies are revolutionizing the study of the ocean and shaping the skill sets needed by the future workforce.

Our dynamic career immersion days raise awareness of career and business opportunities in the growing ocean sector among high school students. The series connects students in person and online with local entrepreneurs, oceanographers, researchers, engineers and technology developers. These events have connected remote classes online and brought students onsite to NL ocean industry leaders such as SubC Imaging, Genoa Design International, and Harbour Grace Ocean Enterprises.

Summer Work Placements

Summer internships for high school students help them get a head start on ocean industry careers. During our immersive summer internships, high school students get the chance to work on exciting real-world projects with host company teams. Students gain hands-on experience with the latest technologies, build their work portfolios and explore their potential career interests. Company mentors grow their coaching skills, get unique insight into their projects, real hands-on intern contribution to their work, and possibly a future team member.

In 2018, 16 high school students worked on diverse projects including development of underwater camera platforms, research and testing of 3-D scanning technology, invasive species monitoring, corporate sales, collection and testing of samples for fish health research, electrical systems design, welding and fabrication, and engine repair.
