PROVINCIAL STUDENTS WINNERS AT UNDERWATER ROBOT CONTEST

A team of students from Newfoundland and Labrador joined American and Russian competitors as winners on Saturday in a global competition for underwater robots at the only federal freshwater marine sanctuary in the United States.
The high school and university teams were among 60 from 18 states and 13 countries participating in the 13th Marine Advanced Technology Education Remotely Operated Vehicle International Competition at Michigan's Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
TEACHERS TO PARTICIPATE IN COASTAL AND OCEAN SCIENCES WORKSHOP

Teachers who participated in a two-year pilot program designed to encourage the integration of coastal and ocean science programming in schools will have an opportunity to share their perceptions of the program, and learn more about future programming, through a two-day workshop, Oceans Exchange, offered through the Oceans Learning Partnership (OLP). The workshop will take place aboard the M/V Coastal Explorer, August 4-5, at the Royal Newfoundland Yacht Club in Conception Bay South.
SETTING SAIL FOR ARCTIC STORIES

In 1999, explorer and educator Geoff Green set out on a mission to introduce young people to the polar regions and the communities that exist there. Since then the organisation he founded, Students on Ice (SOI), has lead over 1,000 young people, educators and scientists on expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic, providing them with a unique insight into a world so far removed from their everyday lives.

ENGAGING RESEARCH THAT CAPTURES THE ATTENTION OF YOUTH

(Fisheries and Aquaculture, May 23, 2014) Having completed annual research initiatives for the Fisheries and Marine Institute’s Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research, the RV Celtic Explorer was the site of an educational tour as 12 provincial high school students, and students from the Marine Institute’s Marine Environmental Program got a first hand glimpse into the workings of a research vessel. They also had the opportunity to meet with the Honorable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture.
