Between 2006 and 2010, private-sector R&D expenditures in the Newfoundland and Labrador ocean technology cluster increased 57 per cent to $23 million, and institutional spending on research surpassed $20 million. R&D intensity in Newfoundland and Labrador’s ocean technology cluster is among the highest in Canada when measured either on a per capita basis or by economic output, according to Dr. Henri Rothschild, President and CEO of International Science and Technology Partnerships Canada.
The exceptional facilities, expertise and research capacity at post-secondary institutions and research institutes in St. John’s constitute a powerful force in the development of the cluster.
