St. John’s, NL (Jan. 19, 2012) – Northern Radar Inc has been awarded a subcontract from Raytheon Canada Limited to provide subsystems, installation services and site development for the Next Generation High Frequency Surface Wave Radar (HFSWR). The project is a Technology Demonstration Program sponsored by the Canadian Department of National Defence, Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) and will see a system installed at Hartlen Point, Nova Scotia later in 2012.
This subcontract is part of the $7 million contract awarded to Raytheon Canada by the National Defence. HFSWR is an over-the-horizon radar sensor that detects and tracks ship traffic and ice monitoring within a nation’s 200 nautical mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Northern Radar has worked with Raytheon Canada installing these systems in the Black Sea and the Indian Ocean where the operating system has proven itself in all operating environments and a wide range of sea state conditions. It is a fully exportable technology.
“We believe this technology is the key to providing persistent, active surveillance of Canada’s 200
nautical mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ),” said Brian Smith, general manager of Raytheon Canada,
Waterloo. “HFSWR is one of the most important new technologies available to protect our fisheries and marine environment and to provide ice flow monitoring in the Arctic and East Coast. We are also very proud to be working together with our partners at Northern Radar in St. John’s, NL, to make this program a success.”
“This is an excellent opportunity to continue the close cooperation with Raytheon Canada and DRDC that we have experienced over many years and we are pleased to see that Canada is taking the next step towards implementing the HFSWR as an EEZ surveillance tool,” said Barry Dawe, President of Northern Radar. “We believe that Canada’s continued progress with HFSWR will encourage many further export sales of this technology.”
