Collaboration Between Newfoundland and Labrador and Iceland Continues to Grow

A memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed on Thursday, June 11, between the Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) of Memorial University of Newfoundland and Matís Ltd. will provide a framework for the advancement of fisheries and oceans-related education, training and research and development between Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, and Iceland. MEMBER OF ICELAND OCEAN CLUSTER AWARDED 2015 ICELAND INNOVATION PRIZE

Icelandic company Zymetech, which develops and manufactures formulations containing marine-derived enzymes for therapeutic application, received the 2015 Iceland Innovation Prize yesterday morning. Minister of Industry and Commerce Ragnheiður Elín Árnadóttir presented Zymetech’s research and development manager Ágústa Guðmundsdóttir, who is also a professor of food chemistry at the University of Iceland, with the prize. FISHERIES RESEARCH RECEIVES A BOOST FROM THE PROVINCE

(St. John's, NL: 19 Feb. 2015) Fisheries science research on three different species will be advanced with support from the provincial government. The Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, today announced $92,850 through the Fisheries Research Grant Program to help the Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research study mackerel, cod, and halibut. ICELANDIC SANITATION SYSTEM TO BE INSTALLED IN FOGO CO-OP PLANT

Whole-facility sanitation technology that is new to the seafood processing industry in Newfoundland and Labrador will be installed at a processing plant on Fogo Island and tested by D-Tech, an Icelandic technology ocean cluster company. The initiative is being conducted in co-operation with Fogo Island Co-operative Society(FICS) with $55 thousand in assistance from the provincial government's Fisheries Technology and New Opportunities Program.
