Kraken Sonar Systems Inc. is a marine technology company engaged in the design and development of high performance sonars and acoustic sensors for military and commercial applications. Operating out of the downtown core of St. John’s, the Kraken team is made up of internationally recognized experts in undersea remote sensing applications. The team is unique in that it has several decades of experience in advanced deep ocean technology, including significant research and development, design, engineering and manufacturing expertise in both advanced sonar systems and underwater robotics.
What do we do?
We are world leading developers of Synthetic Aperture Sonar (SAS), an advanced sonar technology used for ultra-high resolution seabed imaging. SAS is closely related to synthetic aperture radar and medical ultrasound. This innovative technology uses sophisticated signal processing of successive acoustic pings to form an image with much higher resolution than conventional sonars.
Synthetic Aperture Sonar was initially developed for demanding military applications such as naval mine detection and classification. As SAS technology becomes more affordable, it’s expected to find wide use in civilian markets and become a valuable supplement to, and in some cases, a replacement for conventional sonar technology. The practical realization of Synthetic Aperture Sonar is recognized as one of the most significant advances in ocean systems engineering in recent times.
Kraken’s award-winning AquaPix® system is the world’s most technologically advanced and competitively priced Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Sonar. AquaPix® sets a new standard for high-speed, ultra-high resolution seabed imaging. Kraken is the only Canadian company which has successfully developed and demonstrated this technology.

We are currently engaged in various stages of technology validation and teaming agreements with leading laboratories and strategic industry partners including Defence Research and Development Canada, U.S. Navy’s Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA); the UK Ministry of Defence; International Submarine Engineering; ECA Robotics and others.
Kraken was a finalist for Canada’s National Research Council’s 2012 Innovation award and was named to the Marine Technology reporter’s 2013 MTR Top 100 List. We have also been granted NATO Confidential Security clearance from the Canadian Government.
Being a NATI member
Being a NATI member has assisted Kraken in many ways. We have we have participated in several of the NATI trade missions, availed of sources of funding through NATI, learned of industry relevant activities and made many invaluable international industry contacts. Through NATI, we have access to a world class group of companies. We have the opportunity, through different NATI events, to interface with other local high tech companies that we may not otherwise have the opportunity to get to know.
