    • Focus: understanding of the fundamental unit operations of industrial processes.
    • Facilities: Gas Absorption, Liquid extraction unit, Permeability and Fluidization, Tubular Reactor, Reverse Osmosis, Crystallization unit, Distillation Column and the Solid liquid extraction unit.

  • Structures Laboratory
    • Focus: destructive testing to investigate maximum performance capabilities, including tension and compression loading under both static and dynamic conditions.
    • Facilities: two 10-tonne overhead cranes; 40 foot ceilings; 3,000psi 75hp hydraulic system; three-foot thick reaction floor used to secure custom load frames for testing.

  • Thermal Laboratory
    • Focus: investigation of material properties under controlled pressure and temperature conditions
    • Facilities: boiler (steam) and refrigeration (vapour) systems; engine dynamometer; 12’WX14’LX12’H walk-in refrigeration unit (to -30 degrees C) equipped with computer controlled (load and position) high pressure MTS load frame, 10,000 psi pressure intensifier and associated tri-axial confinement chamber (synchronized with the load frame); ice machining.

  • Hibernia Enhanced Oil Recovery Lab
    • Focus: dedicated to providing laboratory and simulation support to the enhanced oil recovery activities of the oil and gas industry and to solving fundamental problems of multiphase flow. 
    • Facilities: coreflooding and visualization equipment including high-pressure (10,000 psi)/high-temperature (2000 C), two phase and three-phase steady-state core-flooding apparatus including quizix pumps, high resolution pressure transducers, two/three phase acoustic separators, oscillating back pressure regulator and inline viscometers.

Ocean Engineering Research Centre

  • Objectives are to advance ocean engineering research and technology development; promote interaction between researchers and ocean technology stakeholders; foster an innovative, wealth-creating research climate, technology transfer, entrepreneurship and commercialization of research; and take an active role in shaping policies in the ocean engineering, offshore engineering and marine technology sectors

      • Focus: development and proof of performance of autonomous ocean systems (including autonomous underwater vehicles, unmanned surface craft and unmanned aerial vehicles) in cold ocean environments

  • Marine Environmental Research Lab for Intelligent Vehicles (MERLIN)
    • Focus: application autonomous underwater vehicles to research in the marine environment. 
    • Facilities: International Submarine Engineering Explorer Class AUV (including R2 Sonics 2024 Multibeam Echosounder System, Edgetech 2200M Side Scan Sonar/Subbottom Profiler, LinkQuest MA5000 USBL and various other integrated nav and comms systems); Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) System
  • Process Safety Lab
    • Focus: Development and dissipation of knowledge related to safer and cleaner process operation, with a particular focus on mitigation of pressure, thermal and reactive hazards
    • Facilities: basic infrastructure facilities for investigating chemical behaviour in different operating conditions (especially maritime offshore)
  • Small vessel simulator
    • Focus: Development of immersive simulators for training the operators of small vessels, including lifeboats and fast rescue craft.
    • Facilities: virtual environment to enable crews of offshore petroleum installations to rehearse emergency response procedures.
  • Structures Lab
    • Focus: wide range of testing on a variety of structures
    • Facilities: Include equipment and test facilities to carry out a wide range of tests (including fracture toughness and flexural modulus) on offshore structures
  • Towing Tank
    • Focus: various tests in the ship design and offshore research fields
    • Facilities: 54 metre towing tank for use in ship design and offshore research. Equipment includes various dynamometers, signal conditioners and particle image velocimetry (PIV) system. Lab owns a variety of ship models ranging from fishing vessels to offshore supply vessels.

  • Has the lead federal role in managing Canada’s fisheries and safeguarding its waters
    • Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Centre (Science Facilities)
      • Focus: research on eastern Canadian Fisheries and the sustainability of stocks.
      • Facilities: live animal holding facility (aquarium), with 52 flow-through tanks, with the capability of freshwater, seawater, filtered and chilled seawater research. An open plan flexible multiuse aquatic science research laboratory, for biological and chemical analysis. A large necropsy laboratory with walk-in cold storage. A physical Oceanography workshop with 3 m deep seawater testing tank. Otolith preparation and reading rooms, large purposed built preserved biological specimen storage facility including separate space for chemical storage. Various field equipment for freshwater and offshore marine research, including a number of small boats and handheld equipment. Two large offshore science research trawlers, CCGS Alfred Needler, 50 m and the CCGS Teleost, 63 m, and a near shore research vessel the CCGS Vladykov, 25 m, which are operated by CCG for DFO Science.
