Underwater Glider Research and Development

Dr. Ralf Bachmayer is the Canada Research Chair in Ocean Technology at Memorial University in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. In June 2010 he opened the Autonomous Ocean Systems Laboratory (AOSL) in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, and is currently supervising five master’s degree students and three doctoral students from Canada, China, and Iran on various projects in Ocean and Naval Architectural Engineering. Vortex-induced vibration (VIV) is a key issue for oil companies that are planning deepwater projects (water depth over 1,000 feet or 304 meters). VIV is the motion generated by the flow of water against the riser (the cylinder that connects the drilling or production platform to the subsea wellhead), producing vortices that are shed alternately from one side of the riser to the other. The longer the riser, the greater the VIV-induced loading, so VIV suppression devices are a critical component in deepwater riser design. Read more.

Marport Awarded Major Defence Contract

Ottawa, Ontario – May 9, 2011: Marport Deep Sea Technologies Inc., a leading developer of sonar technology for commercial and military applications, announced today that its subsidiary, Marport C-Tech Ltd., has been awarded a multi-million dollar contract to manufacture helicopter dipping sonar modules for international defence contractor SELEX Galileo.
