The Faculty of Engineering offers undergraduate cooperative degree programs which include ocean and naval architectural engineering. It also offers undergraduate specializations in offshore oil and gas consisting of common core courses, disciplinary specific courses and elective courses. Graduate engineering programs include research-based programs in ocean and naval architectural engineering as well as oil and gas engineering. Ocean engineering research – particularly focused on Arctic and cold water environments - has historically been an area of strength in the Faculty of Engineering. Research facilities include:
- Fluids Laboratory with wave tank and carriage, deep water tank, wind tunnel, open water flume, portable flume, multi-phase flow loop, petroleum reservoir simulator.
- Process safety and risk engineering facility for investigating chemical behaviour in different operating conditions - especially in offshore operating conditions.
- Autonomous Oceans Systems Laboratory focused on research and development of autonomous ocean systems including:
- Ocean gliders with enhanced operating and data collection capabilities.
- A swath vessel to facilitate the launch and recovery of underwater gliders as well as testing of new instrumentation and prototype systems.
- Development of SeaQuest X-1 (SQX-1), a compact, lightweight, reliable and low cost Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) for search and survey applications in coastal waters.
- The Marine Environmental Research Laboratory for Intelligent Vehicles (MERLIN) - a multi-disciplinary facility involved with the use of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) for research in the marine environment.
The Ocean Engineering Research Centre (OERC) is a research group within the Faculty that aims to advance ocean engineering research, promote interaction amongst researchers and other stakeholders, foster an innovative, wealth-creating research milieu, and take an active role in shaping policies in ocean technology. The scope of applied research and consulting activities carried out by members of the OERC is broad, including ocean engineering related to the offshore oil and gas, marine transportation, and fishing industries.
