  • How can we retain the newcomers that we have worked so hard to attract to the province?
  • What incentives should we provide (to employers, newcomers, settlement agencies and others) and what barriers should we remove?
  • How can we better coordinate activities between government, academia, civil society and employers?

These are but some of the questions that we will address at this day-long symposium at Memorial University. There’s not much point spending a great deal of effort attracting and settling newcomers if they simply leave after a short period. Newcomers will stay where they can earn a living – but also where they feel they belong.

This symposium will bring together representatives from all three levels of government, from the post-secondary education system, from settlement agencies, from employer groups and from other related organizations, as well as from the newcomer community to discuss how best to coordinate efforts to raise the retention rate.

The morning session will look at the retention of all newcomers, regardless of their reason for arriving. The afternoon session will focus on international students at both the College of the North Atlantic and Memorial University; together, these two educational institutions represent the largest gateway for newcomers into the province, and therefore deserve special attention.

Free parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis; otherwise, metered parking is available. A complimentary lunch and refreshments will be provided. Register here or call Patricia Churchill at (709) 864-2330.
