Ocean Discovery and Change through Technology: New Gadgets, New Views
Dr. Paul Snelgrove, Departments of Ocean Sciences and Biology,
Dr. Brad De Young, Departments of Physics and Physical Oceanography, Memorial University
Rapid developments in ocean technologies over the last decade are changing our capacity to sample the ocean and its inherent biological, physical, chemical and geological complexity. A revolution in the use of digital imagery, fiber optics, underwater vehicles (ROVs, AUVs, gliders), molecular biology, and constantly improving sensors has replaced the previous model of surface deployed instruments on sporadic oceanographic cruises as the primary tool of oceanographers. Doctors Snelgrove and De Young will present their experiences with these technologies in the North Atlantic and elsewhere to illustrate new ways of seeing the ocean.
