Enhancing Technology and Innovation for Polar Navigation

E Navigation Underway North America Ocean Innovation 2017 Program
In October 2017 the Marine Institute will host a joint conference which combines e-Navigation Underway (North America) 2017 with Ocean Innovation 2017.
e-Navigation Underway Conferences are led by IALA, in close cooperation with interested maritime administrations of IMO Member States and international organizations. These conferences are concerned with gathering stakeholder opinions and facilitating the exchange of views and experiences, promoting understanding between equipment manufacturers and users, cooperation in field tests and verification of emerging e-navigation concepts and technologies and discussions on future e-navigation policy. Each conference produces a set of conclusions for the guidance of stakeholders and to further progress e-navigation.
Under the all-encompassing theme “Enhancing Technology and Innovation for Polar Navigation” the conference will examine e- Navigation as it relates to the following areas: Infrastructure, Ice Navigation and Passage Planning (User Needs and Local Knowledge), Incident Response (Including Antarctic), Sea Traffic Management (Arctic Corridors), and Governmental Programs and plans (Polar Code).
The advent of the Polar Code in particular provides an excellent opportunity to examine how e-navigation can best serve the needs of Polar maritime decision-makers, and the conference will provide a ‘User Forum’ in which to articulate Polar Navigation specific needs and help shape actions to address them. Particular emphasis will be placed on the North American Arctic, although both the Arctic and Antarctic Polar Regions will be considered.
In addition to stimulating presentations, networking and cross fertilization of ideas the OI and e-Navigation Underway 2017 Committee will provide a final report summarizing the conference’s conclusions and recommendations for the way forward with E navigation. Submitted to all who are involved in the development and implementation of e-navigation, (including IMO’s Navigation, Communications, Search and Rescue (NCSR) Subcommittee, IALA’s ENAV Committee and others) it is sure to make an impact.
